What is an Alpaca?

An alpaca is somewhat like a llama, only smaller. They belong to the camilid family. They are mild-tempered and inquisitive. Alpacas are native to the high Andes Mountains of South America. Domesticated for centuries by the Inca tribe of Peru, their precious fleece was worn only by royalty. With its buttery soft texture and 22 natural shades, the ancient Incas referred to their fiber as “The Fiber of the Gods”. Alpaca fiber is hypoallergenic and incredibly soft on the skin. This fleece is sheared once a year before the "hot" season arrives. Each alpaca yields five to ten pounds of fleece. After minimal preparation, it is ready to be spun into yarn for knitting, crocheting, and weaving. It can also be used to make felt for creating hats, cloth, rugs, moccasins, and other items.

There are two different breed-types: the huacaya and the suri. They are physiologically nearly identical with the main physical difference being the fleece. Huacaya fleece gives the animal a teddy bear like appearance, fluffy with waves. The Suri have no crimp, so their fiber clings to itself. This fiber forms locks that hang down from the body.

Alpacas stand around three feet tall at the shoulder or withers, and weigh between 100 to 200 pounds. They require only a modest amount of food. (In America we usually over feed them!) They have strong herding instincts and need the companionship of other alpacas to thrive. It is best to provide an alpaca with a companion alpaca of the same gender or a neutered alpaca. They are an intelligent animal that respond to a variety of training and handling techniques.

There are many alpaca shows throughout North America. Each region has its own organiaztion, as well as most states. Alpaca Owners & Breeders Association (AOBA) is a wonderful organization for alpaca owners that gives very detailed information about the alpaca lifestyle. The shows cover many areas of the alpaca: Halter is the overall animal, Fleece judges just the fleece, Spin Off takes a small part of the fleece, and the obstacle and showmanship is how you and your alpaca work together.

Alpacas are a great way to enhance your life no matter where you live.
